In the historical „Haus des Deutschen Sports,“ situated in the „Olympiapark Berlin“ (Olympiastadion), on the 9th and 10th of January, 244 fencers from 24 nations fought passionately for points for various rankings and the legendary „White Bear“. The fights took place simultaneously in five halls. One round of pools and afterwards direct elimination, that took place on the first day of tournament, eliminated 180 fencers leaving the last 64 to fight for the „White Bear“ on the second day.
This year, the finals took again place in the fascinating „Kuppelsaal“. In this location was fought in once before during the Olympic Games 1936, where the famous fencer Helene Mayer won Olympic silver.
At the end of two tough and challenging days of fighting, where everyone gave everything, an enthusiastic audience could experience the finals of four in the extraordinary atmosphere of the „Kuppelsaal“.
Themselves qualified had Anatoliy HEREY (UKR), titelholder Frederik Von Der OSTEN (DEN), Richard POKORNY (CZE), and Niklas MULTERER (GER). MULTERER narrowly won the trophy „Weißer Bear of Berlin“ in the fight against Richard POKORNY (15:14). HEREY and Von Der OSTEN finished in third place each. Like last year, Frederik VON DER OSTEN is the winner of the U23.
